    Academic Integrity FAQ

Why did my instructor report me?

Faculty are obligated to report any concerns of violations of academic integrity. The report of a concern starts an investigation in to the allegation where the student has an opportunity to share information.

I was reported for violating policy, but I don’t know why.

Instructors are encouraged to talk with students about their concerns, but depending on the situation, they may choose not to. During the meeting with the Associate Dean, the circumstances of why you were reported will be shared with you so that you can address the concerns.

What should I expect at my meeting with the Associate Dean?

It is the job of the Associate Dean to determine whether or not you violated policy. To do so, you will be asked questions and given an opportunity to share your perspective on what occurred, provide any information that you think is important. You are able to provide any evidence that you want to have considered.

What happens if I don’t meet with the Associate Dean?

Students who fail to make an appointment to meet with the Associate Dean will have a hold placed on their account that prevents adding or dropping classes, getting a transcript and other administrative processes. The hold will only be removed once a meeting with the Associate Dean occurs.

What does being found “responsible” or “not responsible” mean?

After considering all of the evidence, students accused of violating academic integrity policy are found to be either ‘responsible’; meaning a majority of the evidence indicates that policies were violated, or they are found ‘not responsible’; meaning the majority of the evidences indicates that policies were not violated.  If found not responsible, students will maintain the grades they earned in the class and no disciplinary sanctions will be assigned. If found responsible, students will face disciplinary and/or academic sanctions.

What are the possible sanctions if found responsible?

If a student is found responsible, they will receive disciplinary and/or academic sanctions. Disciplinary sanctions, as outlined in Article XV include, admonition, warning, disciplinary probation, suspension or expulsion. Academic sanctions are assigned by the instructor and should be in alignment with the syllabus. Typically, academic sanctions include deduction of points, failure on the exam or assignment, failure in the course or anything else identified in the syllabus.

I reported a student for violating academic integrity policies, but I haven’t received the decision yet – what should I do?

Once a case has been heard and a decision made, faculty will receive an email or phone call notifying the instructor of the decision. In accordance with FERPA regulations, it is not always possible for details to be shared about the student’s situation or the case. If time has passed and you have not yet been informed of the status of your case, please contact Associate Dean of Students, Annie Virkus-Estrada at annie.virkus-estrada@baruch.cuny.edu.
