This is a listing of current and past scams that have targeted the Baruch College population in various ways. Please be very wary of them or close variations of the same scam.
Check Cashing/Identity Theft Scam
The email below seems to come from a Baruchmail student address and targets users to extract money and personal information. Baruch College is aware of the ongoing scam. Please do not respond to the ad or engage the scammer.
Secret Shopper/Personal Assistant Scams
Email containing an offer of employment to be a “secret shopper” or “personal assistant.” Such unsolicited offers are scams. Sometimes the message is sent from a CUNY email address whose account has been compromised, or references a CUNY “job placement” office, to lend “legitimacy” to the email. Please refer to document below for full details.
Personal Assistant Scam
The email below has been circulating to various Baruch addresses. Please be advised that Baruch is not associated with the person sending the email and you should not reply or attempt to make contact.
Pet Sitter Scam
The email below has been circulating CUNY wide. Please note this is not a legitimate job but a scam.
“Hello !
This is to notify you about an available part time vacancy. Mrs. Ayla Madeson needs a part time pet sitter to care for her lovely pet dog for nine hours every week. She offers to pay $400 weekly. Please contact (aylamadeson22@outlook.com) for more information. Remember to email her with your private email not your school email when applying.

The email appears to originate from an official email address, however, it is a scam.

This has been confirmed to be a scam. Please to not engage.
WHO Scam
The email below has been circulating and is considered a scam. Please disregard.
“Please find information for an application to WHO (World Health Organization )
The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health.
Hours – 8 – 16 Hours Weekly.
Pay – $250 – $300 Weekly
Skills Needed – Data Entry, Personal Shoppers, House Keepers, Bookkeeping, Personal Errands, Visual Task
Status – Available to all students and staffs”
Targeted, Unsolicited Email/Phone Call Scam

Professor/Research Assistant Scam
The victim receives an email from an individual claiming to be professor Hammou Elbarmi, promising 400$ per week for the role of research assistant at Baruch College. Eventually, this converts into a check cashing scam. Please make sure you disregard any emails and do not deposit fraudulent checks into your personal bank account. The following email addresses have been associated with this scam: hammou.elbarmi@gmail.com and Hammou.Elbarmi@baruchmail.cuny.edu.
