    Monday, April 4–Saturday, April 9

Asian Fashion Show is an event where all Asian clubs on campus come together to celebrate and showcase their Asian culture. Since we are hosting this event through our Instagram platform, we want to diversify the ways in which students can showcase their culture. Although we will be accepting pictures or videos of students in their cultural outfits, we would also like for you guys to have the option to represent your culture through food, jewelry, music/dance, art, language, etc. It is totally up to you as to how you would like to share and represent your culture! If you are interested in participating in this event, you will be submitted into a raffle.

“He Named Me Malala” is a 2015 documentary based on the life of a young Pakistani girl named Malala Yousafzai. She is one of the world’s human and children rights activists and one of the youngest people to win a Nobel Peace Prize for advocating for the right for girls to get an education in her hometown. Cultural Appreciation vs Cultural Appropriation: Why It matters
    Wednesday, April 13, 2:00p.m.

Cultural Appropriation has plagued many different underrepresented communities and has had particularly severe impacts on the cultures that exist within the Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi-American community. The line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation is not as thin as many people may be led to believe and it is important to understand when you are celebrating someone’s cultural ties and when you are crossing the line. Join us on Wednesday, April 13 as we have an honest conversation on the Dos and Don’ts of Cultural Appropriation.

    Trainings

The 75-minute, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!’s 5D’s of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Asian and Asian American folks are facing right now — from macroaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see anti-Asian/American harassment online or in person.

How to respond to Harassment for people Experiencing Anti-Asian/American harassment
    Monday, April 11th 3:00p.m – 4:00 p.m.

Vietnamese Student Association: Presents One Catch at a time: A Dive into Vietnam’s Fishing Culture
    Thursday, April 14, 12:50- 2:00p.m.
Some of my fondest memories of Vietnam take place on a little boat in the outskirts of Long Xuyen City. My grandfather took me on fishing trips when I was young, and as I patiently observed the waters reflecting the streaking clouds waiting for a fish to bite, the scent of Marlboro would waft through the stillness of a warm afternoon in Vietnam. Suddenly, the stillness of it all would be interrupted by a brief flash of a fish struggling on the line and after that, a victorious cry from my grandfather, with cigarette still in his mouth: “ông ngoại bắt được con cá!” (“Grandpa caught a fish!”) – Randy Huynh, Cultural Chair Shadow 2022.
If that beautiful memory didn’t catch your eye (and heart) already, we hope you’ll join us in getting a taste of the rich fishing culture and history of Vietnam!

Visit the Baruch Student Life website for the full list of all 2022 Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month events. Events will be added weekly to the Bearcat Buzz.

Queer Workshop: Writing is Not a Luxury

    Thursday, April 7, 14, and 28, 2022
    5:30p.m. – 7:00p.m. (EST)

    Register

In this 3-part program, Baruch LGBTQIA+ students will come together to read, write, and create works that draw on their own queer experience. In her 1985 essay, “Poetry is Not a Luxury,” Audre Lorde writes that “The quality of light by which we scrutinize our lives has direct bearing upon the product which we live, and upon the changes which we hope to bring about through those lives.” This workshop will help students shine that light: together, we’ll read Lorde’s Sister Outsider, write our own essays, stories, and poems, and collaborate on editing and publishing the writing that comes out of the workshop. With student permission, work will be published in zines and/or online.

April 7 from 5:30p.m. – 7:00p.m.: Before this meeting, students read a few essay from Lorde’s book; the meeting is spent discussing and drawing inspiration from her text.
April 14 from 5:30p.m. – 7:00p.m.: Students bring in their own writing to workshop and prepare for publication
April 28 from 5:30p.m. – 7:00p.m.: Zine workshop with homie house press (We will be creating a unique one of a kind zine. All you need is one sheet of paper, scissors, and something to write/draw with. Together with these tools we learn to flesh out ideas and spread them into a small scale book form. We will delicately look at the history of zines and see how knowledge outside of the mainstream media has been disseminated and used for survival within queer cultures as well as other underrepresented groups.)
