Beware of Fake Job Offers and Phishing Scams
Recently there has been an increase in fraudulent job offer emails targeting members of the Baruch community. These deceptive emails originate from various email addresses but share common traits and aim to exploit unsuspecting recipients.
Here’s what you need to know:
Identifying Fake Job Offers
These fraudulent emails often impersonate Baruch or CUNY professors and offer remote Research Assistant positions with tempting compensation. The emails may contain grammatical errors or unusual language and typically request personal information through text messages or phone calls.
What NOT to Do
- Do not respond to these emails or engage with the senders in any way.
- Do not provide personal information, such as Social Security number, bank account details, or any other sensitive information.
- If the sender sent you a check, do not deposit the check in your bank account, as it is likely a fake check.
- Do not send the person any money.
- Do not respond to emails from illegitimate email addresses. Please look carefully at the email address of the originator to make sure it is from an actual Baruch address.
