Bearcat Buzz – October 14, 2022
October 31: Winter and Spring 2023 registration begins
To ensure the safety, security, and well-being of our students, Baruch College has determined that a moratorium had been placed on pledging and rush activities in all Baruch social fraternities and sororities at least through May 31, 2024. Read a message from the Vice President for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, Art King, for further details. * To anonymously report any hazing activity please fill out the Hazing Incident Report Form.
Email Hoaxes
It has come to our attention that students at Baruch College and other CUNY campuses have received a message with the subject “Important Message from College Finance Department.” The message offers a “covid-19 financial aid grant.” The message is NOT from the College; it is a scam designed to get students to divulge their personal information. If you have received this message, please delete it. If you responded to the message and provided your personal information, please contact helpdesk@baruch.cuny.edu for assistance with changing your passwords and taking further action, if necessary.
The College has distributed previous warnings about email scams. Please keep the following in mind regarding any message you receive:
– Do not provide personal information (home address, user names, etc.) in response to emails, text messages, or websites that come from someone you do not know or from a suspicious email sender.
– Never provide your password in an email.
– Do not deposit checks from unknown senders.
– Do not click on links or open attachments in suspicious emails.
– Be wary of messages requesting urgent action.
While we work actively to identify and prevent these messages, our ability to keep users secure is critically dependent on the Baruch community being educated and skeptical about fraudulent messages. Please remain alert, as scams can happen at any time and dupe individuals of all ages and backgrounds and all levels of tech sophistication.
Job Scams
This is a reminder to bring your attention to recent job scams and email hoaxes. Although it is not from Starr Search, we want to bring it to your attention. Here is the latest job scam that we received: Job Scam. If you received these types of job scams, please delete it immediately and flag it as spam in your Baruchmail email system. Do not engage in any correspondence with the sender. Please read this announcement to on how to look out for warning signs and to better protect yourself against these hoaxes and scams.

Newman Vertical Campus (NVC) Projects
- Terrazzo Floor Replacement: The first phase of this project, which began earlier this calendar year, is on schedule to be finished this fall. Remaining areas are expected to be done later this year. Once completed, the next phase will begin. We thank the entire Baruch community for your patience during this renovation.
- B-Level Elevator: The elevator transporting occupants from the first floor to the B1, B2, and B3 levels in the NVC remains offline as our vendors seek to secure the parts necessary to repair the elevator.
Information and Technology Building (ITB) Projects
- Elevator Modernization: The first phase of this project, progressing on schedule, addresses increased traffic flow, includes new code-compliant elevator controls, and accommodates additional openings and stops (Phase 2). As we move through the construction process, Campus Facilities and Operations will send individual updates informing occupants of elevator closures. The initial phase of this project is expected to be completed in spring 2023.
Field Building at 17 Lexington Avenue (17 Lex) Projects
- Elevator Service Disruption: One of the six Field Building elevators is currently out of service. While Baruch’s Buildings and Grounds works with our counterpart teams at CUNY and DASNY to rectify the issue, the College has deployed extra Public Safety officers to provide additional assistance to manage the volume of people waiting for elevators. We thank you for your patience and ask, if possible, to allow extra time to reach your destination. Peak elevator times are 10:45 a.m.–12:00 p.m., 2:30–3:45 p.m., 4:10–5:25 p.m., and 5:50–7:20 p.m.
Cross-Campus Projects
- Restroom Renovation Projects: We are currently renovating restrooms in three campus buildings: the Administration Building, NVC, and ITB. We have unfortunately encountered several supply chain issues and await critical material in order to fully complete the first phase of work at the Administration Building. Phase 2 areas, also under construction, are single-use, all-gender restrooms on the first floor of the Administration Building, the first floor of the ITB, and the third floor at the NVC. Phase 2 is expected to be completed this year.
